Extension of sanctions
The US senat, as well as the US House of Representatives, voted to extend the sanctions against Iran. The so called ISA date back to the 90s and basically give the US president the opportunity to impose sanctions against entities doing business with the Iran.
In July 2015 the Iran and the P5 + 1 – the US, the UK, Russia, France, China and Germany – agreed upon the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) which says that all nuclear-related sanctions against the Iran are to be lifted and no new ones are to be imposed if the Iran sticks by the agreed commitments. All reports observing the implementation of the plan in Iran confirmed that the country fulfilled the commitments.
Now the vote raises questions if the US plans new sanctions. The Iranian Forgeign Minister Außenminister Mohammad Javad Zarif commented the vote and said that it had “no executive effect” but “from the standpoint of the international community, it shows the lack of credibility of the US government, which acts against its own commitments,”
