Green belt to fight sandstorms
Around 15 kilometres of Iran’s border regions have been planted with saplings which need very little water and are drought-resistant. The project is called ‘Arba’een green belt’ and was initiated by the chief of the Department of Environment, Masoumeh Ebtekar, who hopes to reduce sandstorms with the plants.
The project offers saplings to pilgrims to plant under the expert’s supervision. Ebtekar said that the project combined various positive aspects: apart from the climate change the war in the region has caused environmental problems and the project links religious aspects for the pilgrims with the chance for the people to actively help the environment.
Sandstorms have become an increasing problem for Iran as the sand particles are coming into the cities. The Department of Environment takes the project as a first step to fight these sandstorms.
